An experienced educator from Holbrook, New York, Greg Gerkens devoted his entire career to special education. He has taught in various schools such as Wyandanch Union Free School District, Eastport/South Manor Central School District, and Sachem Central School District. Greg Gerkens contributed and participated in activities that promote the welfare of people with special needs, such as the Polar Plunge.

Polar Plunge is an annual fundraising activity organized by the Special Olympics to benefit its athletic programs. Attended by individuals and teams alike, participants lock in their spots in the event by donating. During the Polar Plunge, participants plunge into icy waters.

The proceeds of the event are used for the training and competitions of athletes. Through the Special Olympics athletic programs, people with intellectual disabilities are provided with opportunities to achieve their life goals, live happier and healthier lives, and feel a sense of belonging to the community.

Special Olympics programs create an inclusive culture through unified sports. The approach allows people with and without intellectual disabilities to play together. Special Olympics provide training and competition opportunities in over 30 individual and team sports.
